The recipients of the 2025 Nagoya City Arts Encouragement Award were announced on January 13th, and Mai Shibata was honored as a recipient.
The Nagoya City Arts Encouragement Award is presented by the Mayor of Nagoya to individuals or groups who have consistently engaged in active artistic creation, are expected to achieve future success, and are anticipated to contribute to the promotion of Nagoya City's arts and culture.
Shibata's works depict “space, landscape, and thought” from a unique perspective, excelling in techniques for expressing spirituality, philosophy, and the inner world. Blending abstraction and figuration, he constructs a distinctive artistic universe that evokes the viewer's emotions and contemplation by expressing the serene depth of light and color through his unique layered structures. His themes span history, religion, environmental issues, and more, with his artistic practice deepening year by year.
This challenging creative approach is steadily gaining recognition, and further achievements in pioneering new expressive realms are anticipated.
